1970 girls champs to be honored

This season is the 50-year anniversary of Montezuma’s 1970 state champion Montezuma Bravettes basketball team.

That team will be honored in January in Montezuma, and later at the state tournament in Des Moine.

In Montezuma, the event takes place during the Jan. 17th games against Belle Plaine.

Team members will be introduced between the girls and boys games and a sample of six-on-six basketball will be offered during the evening.

Players, coaches and chaperones for the 1970 team will receive free admission to the evening’s activities in addition to being honored.

The exhibition six-on-six game will be played during halftime of the girls’ game. Current Montezuma students will be participating in that. The varsity girls game starts at 6 p.m.

It will be a time “for spectators to reminisce and enjoy,” said Megan Carlson, a Montezuma teacher and head girls track coach, who is one of the event’s organizers.

Not all members of the 1970 team members live in the immediate area and Carlson is reaching out to them. “And hopefully you will be attending the recognition at the state tournament,” she said.

People who were part of the team in 1970 are asked to please contact Megan Carlson (mcarlson@montezuma.k12.is.us) if you are interested in attending or have any other questions.

Montezuma would be happy to have you in attendance and honor you again for this amazing accomplishment,” Carlson said.
