BROOKLYN – The Montezuma Bravettes junior high A-team traveled to Brooklyn to play the BGM Bears on Monday, December 5.
BGM has one of the top JH teams in the South Iowa Cedar League Conference.
Both teams started out a little tight as no one scored in the first 3 minutes of play. Then, the Bravettes started stringing baskets together.
At the end of the first quarter, Monte had a 9-0 lead. The Bravettes pushed that lead to 20-0 midway through the second quarter. Monte took a 30-9 lead at the halftime break. The 2nd half was a bit of a stalemate as Monte won, 43-20.
Monte shot 16-43 (37%) from field including 6-14 (43%) from long distance and 5-8 (63%) from the free throw line. BGM was 8-31 (26%), 0-6 from deep and 4-7 (57%) from the free throw line.
The Bravettes edged the rebound battle 26-24. Monte forced 25 turnovers and had 14 of its own.
Vivian Cook had the hot hand. She scored 19 points including five 3-pointers on nine attempts. Viv also had 3 assists and 5 steals.
Leah Urfer had a strong game. She had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Lauryn Larmore had 6 points including a 3-pointer and 3 steals.
Sydnee Burgess had 4 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and a block. Rylee Wolford had 2 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Alexa Rose had 2 points. Letisia Wilson had 3 steals.
The 7th graders only played a quarter due to low numbers on the BGM team. BGM won 8-7. Alexa Rose had 5 points. Sophia Semprini had 2 points.
