Mat season for girls ends shy of state

DES MOINES – The bid by Montezuma’s wrestling girls to make it to the first Iowa state girls wrestling tournament fell short at the regional qualifier on Friday, Jan. 27 at the Iowa Evens Center.

Neither Taya Sincox or Coral Lowry placed among the top four in their weight classes, which was required for a state trip.

Neither placed in the top six, either, which was needed for recognition on the medals stand.

A third Montezuma member of BGM’s team, Taytin Chamberlin, did not compete in the regional meet.

Overall, it was a successful first season for the three Montezuma members of the Bears, and it included a weight championship for Lowry in the SICL meet.

125 pounds – Taya Sincox – did not place

Championship round 1 – Sincox had a bye.

Round 2 – Raeann Elliott, Oskaloosa, pinned Sincox, 2:11.

Consolation rounds 2 and 3 – Sincox had byes

Round 4 – Reann Holt, Williamsburg, pinned Sincox, 0:42.

135 pounds – Coral Lowry, did not place

Championship rounds 1 and 2 – Lowry had byes.

Consolation round 1 – Lowry had a bye.

Consolation round 2, Liberty Boettger, Ballard, won via forfeit.
