SULLY – The idea that “this meet could be your last” sometimes spurs greater effort from athletes
Well, it wasn’t the last for six Bravettes competing in four events at the Class 1A state qualifying track meet in Sully on Thursday, May 15.
That group will be heading to the state finals Thursday through Saturday, May 22-24.
As for the rest . . .some were just so close to qualifying.
Junior sprinter Chloe Snook had her flying feet involved in four state qualifying events – two relays and two as an individual.
Chloe was a close third-place finisher in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. She had great times: 12.70 seconds in the 100, and 27.44 in the 200.
Snook anchored Montezuma’s winning 4×200, and a second-place 4×100.
In the 4×200, the other three runners were Vivian Cook, Syd Burgess and Ryanne Williams. They ran away with this one, breaking the tape almost two full seconds ahead of second place.
In the 4×100, Lily Ferry gave the team one of her dependable lead-off legs, then it was Burgess, Williams and Chloe again at the finish, in 51.83 seconds.
Senior Ellen Cook saved some of her strongest distance running for the last two weeks of the season.
In the 800, she clocked 2:34.94. She was beaten for the 24th and final spot at state by a first-place finisher from another district.
In the 1,500, she ran 5:30.57, but needed to go about 15 seconds faster to nail down the 24th and final qualifying spot.
Freshman hurdler Hayden Sutherland had a sixth-place run of 17.79 seconds in the 100-meter event. That didn’t get her real close to a qualifying time, but it was a noteworthy clocking for a ninth-grader.
Montezuma’s 1,600 medley quartet had another close-but-no cigar time. They ran 4:40.01 to take fourth locally, but needed 4:38.71 in order to make state.
The the throws, freshman Sophia Semprini remained consistent in the discus, taking fourth place with a 91-3 effort. She needed about six more feet to qualify for state – but look for her to add that and more by next year’s meet.
