The Montezuma Bravettes 7th grade girls basketball team hosted the Baxter Bolts JH team on January 16 and came away with a 26-15 win.
Ava Pargeon got a quick basket right out of the gate but the Bravettes struggled in the first half against the Bolts 2-3 zone. At half time, Monte trailed 9-6.
Baxter led 11-6 early in the 3rd but then the Bravettes went on a run. Ellen Cook broke the draught with a 17 foot jumper on a nice pass from Taylor Wilcox. On the next possession, Cook found Wilcox for a jumper as the Bravettes started to heat up.
Next time down the court, Cook lost the ball in traffic but quickly retrieved it. While on her knees she found Wilcox for another made shot. On the Bravettes next possession Harlea Pargeon passed to Cook for another successful jumper.
Ellen made it five successful possessions in a row when she drove through defense for a layup.
The Bravettes were on a 10-0 run and now led 16-11. The Bolts had to extend their defense at this point. Now, the Bravettes were able to get the ball inside to their post players.
Shiressa Wetering frustrated the Bolts with three late hoops. The Bravettes steamrolled their way to a 26-15 win.
The Bravettes shot 12-46 for 26%. The Bolts were 6-30 for 20%. Monte outrebound Baxter 35-28. The Bravettes had only 10 turnovers while forcing 21.
Shiressa Wetering and Ellen Cook led the scoring with 7 points. Ellen also had 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 1 block. Shiressa had 10 rebounds and a block. Harlea Pargeon had 4 points & 7 rebounds. Taylor Wilcox had 4 points. Ava Pargeon had 2 points, 6 steals and a block. Kylee Larmore had 2 points.
The Bravettes played 2 extra quarters. Elizabeth DeJong had a strong layup for 2 points. Madison Cheney scored 2 points on a nice pass from Addyson Probasco. Montezuma won 4-0.
In 4 quarter games the 7th grade team moves to 3-1 on the season. Their next game in Monday, Jan. 20.
