Montezuma made some corrections, but a slow start cost the junior high ‘A’ boys basketball team in a 45-16 home loss to Lynnville-Sully on Monday, Dec. 16.
The Hawks outscored the Braves 16-3 in the first quarter and led 33-5 at halftime. Lynnville-Sully added just one point to its lead in a 12-11 second half.
“As a team, we need to do a better job handling pressure and making decisions when the other team presses,” said Montezuma Coach John Beck.
“As the game went on, we did a better job of this, but their press put us in a hole early and led to some very easy baskets off turnovers.”
Garrett Watts led Braves scoring with six points. Tod Geiger and Houston Van Roekel each scored three points. Jack Erselius and Peyton Minner had two points each.
“We did a good job at attacking the basket and kicking out when needed,” Beck said.
“Defensively, in the half-court, we limited their scoring by containing their drives and moving.
