With Coach John Beck calling it, “a complete game win,” the Montezuma 8th grade boys ‘A’ team closed its season with a 53-14 dismantling of Iowa Valley on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
“The boys came out and were determined to give it their all and have fun,” Beck said.
Montezuma led 25-2 after the first quarter, 35-9 at halftime, and 46-14 through three quarters.
“Defensively, we really dictated the game with our press,” Beck said. “We got a lot of steals early on and that led to some easy buckets on our end.”
Houston Van Roekel scored 14 points for Montezuma and Brady Boulton had 12.
Boulton also had seven assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Max Anderson had eight points and four rebounds.
David Rose scored seven points, pulled down five rebounds and had four steals.
Brett Plants squeezed seven rebounds.
“I thought David Rose and Carter Michalek did a great job pressuring the ball and getting in the passing lanes,” Beck said.
“We also controlled the boards, as Brett Plants did a great job there.”
“Offensively, we got everyone involved and got a lot of guys looks at the basket,” said the coach.
“Brady Boulton did a great job moving the ball and finding the open guy,” Beck said. “Max Anderson did a great job attacking and hit a few big shots.”
The coach noted that “Houston Van Roedel was very effective from the floor, hitting some big shots from outside early on and doing some damage inside as well.”
“Overall, I was very happy with our effort and intensity the whole game,” Beck said.
