Montezuma’s 8th grade ‘B’ boys basketball team closed its season with a pair of wins in one day on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
Montezuma 15, Iowa Valley 6
This was a two-quarters game that the Braves led 8-4 after the first quarter.
Broox Stockman scored 8 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and had 3 steals. Luke Brennan scored 3 points and had 2 steals.
“It was a good half of basketball for us,” Coach John Beck said. “Our defense was very sound. Our help defense was much improved from earlier in the season.”
“We did an excellent job on the boards,” the coach said. “Briar Simpson and Broox Stockman did a great job on the offensive glass.”
“The boys took care of the ball and made some shots when we needed to,” the coach said. “We did a real good job of attacking the hoop and got some good looks at the basket.”
Montezuma 23, BGM 17
This was a full game. BGM led 6-4 after one quarter, but the Braves were up 9-7 at halftime and 19-13 after three quarters.
Broox Stockman scored 7 points, had 5 rebounds and came up with 7 steals.
Kiyren Jurgensen had 7 rebounds. Briar Simpson and Isaac Wedgewood each scored 4 points.
“The boys did a great job adjusting and coming out on top in this physical battle,” Beck said. “Winning the boards and the turnover battle won us this game.”
“Kiyren Jurgensen did a great job on the boards,” Beck said. “He is typically a guard, but was able to get in there and secure a bunch of rebounds.”
“We pressured the ball very well,” said the coach. “Guys like Broox Stockman, Luke Brennan and Luke Erselius all pressured the ball well and made their ball handlers work,” Beck said.
“On offense, we had a lot of guys step up. Spencer Ross, Isaac Wedgewood and Luke Erselius all hit some very big shots in situations where we really needed them.”
“Overall, the boys played reall well,” Beck said, “and it was a great way to end the season.”
