The Montezuma 8th grade girls basketball team returned from Marengo with a 44-33 victory, taking their season record out to five wins and two losses.
The game was played Thursday afternoon, Jan. 21.
Both teams struggled to score during the first quarter. The Bravettes led 5-4 at the break.
The Bravettes surged late in the second quarter and took a 19-10 lead into halftime.
Iowa Valley had its best quarter in the third. The Tigers cut the Montezuma lead to six points heading into the fourth.
The Tigers continued to claw into the Bravettes’ lead in the fourth, getting as close as two points. But Montezuma finished strong to get the 44-33 victory.
The Bravettes were 17-for-60 from the field, including one-for-16 from the three-point line and nine-for-25 on free throws. A larger Iowa Valley team had a 47-27 edge in rebounding. But the Tigers made 32 tunovers, compared with Montezuma’s four.
Ellen Cook filled up the stat sheet. She had 18 points, including a three-pointer. She also grabbed six rebounds, dished six assists and had six steals.
Shiressa Wetering was solid with nine points, five rebounds, three steals and a block.
Kylee Larmore had six points and three steals. Ava Pargeon had five points and a block. Taya Sincox had her best game with two points, five rebounds, three steals and a block.
Harlea Pargeon and Taylor Wilcox each had two points.
