The Montezuma Bravettes A-team hosted the Lynnville-Sully Hawks on Monday, Dec. 12.
This was a battle between two of the top junior high girls team in the South Iowa Cedar League.
Both teams struggled to score early but Monte made a late first quarter run to take an 8-3 lead.
Monte extended its lead in the second quarter but the Hawks made a nice run late in the half as the Bravettes led 20-12 at halftime.
Most of the third quarter was frustrating for both teams until Syd Burgess found Vivian Cook for a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Monte had a 29-16 lead at the end of the third quarter.
It was all Monte in the 4th quarter winning the quarter 15-0 and the game 44-16.
Monte shot 16-48 (33%) for the game including 4-12 (33%) from long distance and 8-12 (67%) from the line.
Sully shot 6-35 (17%) from the field and 4-7 (57%) from the line. The bigger Hawks won the rebound battle 38-24. Monte had 11 turnovers while forcing the LS into 33.
Leah Urfer was the leading scorer with 14 points. She was very efficient going 5-6 from the field and 4-6 from the line.
Vivian Cook & Sydnee Burgess both played vital roles scoring 12 each. Viv also made three 3-point baskets, with 7 assists and 9 steals. Syd lead the rebounding with 9. She also had 3 assists and 6 blocks.
Rylee Wolford had a nice game with 6 points including a critical 3-pointer and 3 steals. Letisia Wilson & Lauryn Larmore each had 3 steals.
The Montezuma Bravettes JH A-team moves to 5-1 on the season.
