It was a match-up of the two top JH teams in the South Iowa Cedar League on Monday, Dec. 13
Last year as 7th graders, Lynnville Sully won by 15 and by 3 points. But this time around, it was different, as the Bravettes prevailed, 28-26.
Lynnville-Sully led most of the first quarter, but Monte rallied late to make it 8-7 L-S at the end of one.
The teams traded hoops as Sully took a 15-12 halftime lead. The Bravettes had a big third quarter outscoring LS 8-0 to take a 20-15 lead.
The 4th quarter was very exciting as the Hawks took a 21-20 lead. Claire Erselius immediately answered with a strong drive to give the Bravettes a 22-21 lead.
The Hawks made a free throw to tie it at 22.
Claire made another shot to give Monte a 24-22 lead. The Bravettes got a defensive stop, then Sydnee Burgess scoreed on an inbounds play.
Lynnville-Sully hits consecutive jumpers to tie it at 26-26.
With 8 seconds remaining, the Bravettes have the ball under their own basket. Claire finds Sydnee, who is fouled. Burgess goes to the line and calmly sinks 2 free throws.
Erselius and Chloe Snook double-teamed the ball handler who is unable to get a shot up.
Bravettes win 28-26!
The Bravettes shot 11-58 for 19% from the field and 6-11 from the line. The Hawks were 11-38 for 29% from the field and 6-12 from the line.
