Belle Plaine, up by two points and halftime, used a 12-4 third quarter to create separation, then held on in the fourth for a 47-38 win over Montezuma in junior high ‘A’ boys basketball on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at home.
“It was not the result we wanted, but we are going to learn from it,” said Braves Coach John Beck.
Brady Boulton scored 22 points for Montezuma and added five steals and four rebounds.
David Rose scored six points.
Max Anderson had five rebounds and Kohen Holland pulled down four.
“On offense, we need to attack more,” Beck said. “We were taking good shots, but I would like to see more attack.”
“We did attack better in the fourth quarter and it showed in the box score,” the coach said. “We ran some set plays really well and did hit some big shots down the stretch.”
“On defense, they beat us in transition a few times, but also used their size to hurt us down low. We played well early, but got a little tired,” Beck said.
“Our bigs had their work cut our for them and our guards did a good job helping them out. But in the end, Belle Plaine was able to hit some tough shots,” said the coach.
“Rebounding is going to be a key going forward and will be an emphasis in future practices,” said Beck.
“Overall, our effort was there against a Belle Plaine team that was very talented and athletic. The boys,” Beck said, “will learn from this and continue to grow moving forward.”
