The Montezuma junior high A-boys basketball team capped a 12-0 season with a 62-36 run past Pella Christian on Thursday, Feb. 3, at home.
“This was a a very competitive game,” Braves Coach Dennis Phelps said. “Pella Christian is a traditionally strong basketball school with a larger enrollment than Montezuma.”
The Braves took a lead out to 10 points near the end of the first quarter, and still had it, 32-22, at halftime. Pella Christian got as close as four points late in the third period.
“We regrouped after a time out, dug in defensively, rebounded better and were able to get some fast break baskets,” said the coach.
Brady Boulton led scoring with 28 points, but also dished assists as the Braves drove to the hoop.
“The real improvement was our ability to find openings as Brady drove, then catching the ball.”
Phelps said Broox Stockman (15 points) “continued to provide strong inside play both on offense and defense.”
Dane Strong scored 7 points for the Braves, Luke Erselius and Isaac Wedgewood had 4 each, and Easton Hudnut and Luke Brennan had 2 each.
“I am so proud of each player’s effort not only in games, but especially in 35 practices,” Phelps said. “I was able to observe improvement from each player.”
The coach said he will review the season in a future story.
