‘A’ boys: Progress despite a loss

BAXTER – Despite a 46-23 final score in favor of Baxter, the Montezuma Junior High boys basketball ‘A’ team did some things well in their game Thursday, Jan. 16, according to Coach John Beck.

When Baxter had to run a half-court offense, our defense did a great job making things difficult and forcing them into the shots we wanted them to take,” Beck said.

Offensively, in the half-court we did a good job of finding our shots. Unfortunately, they did not start falling until later in the game,” said the coach.

Baxter led 8-2 after one quarter, 20-7 at half, and 33-18 through three.

I thought we were very balanced with seven different guys scoring,” Beck said.

That included Tod Geiger 6, Kohen Holland 5, Garrett Watts 4, Houston Van Roekel 3, Max Anderson 2, Carter Michalek 2 and Cruz DeJong 1.

We need to do a better job at staying focused for entire possessions,” Beck said. “We had a few mental lapses that cost us possession or led to an easy basket for them.”

The loss dropped the ‘A’ team to 3-2.

Games coming up: Monday, Jan. 20 at Lynnville-Sully; Tuesday, Jan. 20 – at Belle Plainep; Thursday, Jan. 23 – at English Valleys.
