A-girls set a record in 57-3 win

he Montezuma Bravettes junior high A-team traveled to Belle Plaine to face the Plainsman on Tuesday, January 17.

The Bravettes used pinpoint passing and excellent shooting in the first quarter. Rylee Wolford and Vivian Cook each made three 3-point baskets in the first quarter to lead Montezuma to a 21-0 lead.

The Bravettes pushed the lead to 28-3 at halftime.

Montezuma’s defense shut out the Plainsmen in the second half as Monte kept scoring at will. Wolford & Cook each made five 3-pointers for a total of 10 made threes.

Ten triples is a single game team record for Montezuma junior high girls basketball. 57 points in a game is the most points scored by a Monte junior girls team since January of 2016 when Shelby Conger, Maddie McKeag, Carissa Van Zee, Madelyn DeJong, Jazmine LeBahn, Chloe Latcham and Shateah Wetering led a strong team to Keota and scored 60 points.

Monte shot 20-50 (40%) from the field, 10-20 (50%) from 3-point range and 7-11 (64%) on free throws. Belle Plaine shot 1-18 (6%) from the field, 0-1 from 3-point range and 1-4 (25%) on free throws. Montezuma out-rebounded Belle Plaine 31-20. Monte forced 27 turnovers and had only 7 turnovers.

Vivian Cook had another big game. She had 17 points including five treys. Viv also had 7 steals.

Rylee Wolford had her best game ever. She was 5-6 on triples for 15 points. Ry also had 4 steals. Leah Urfer had her biggest rebounding game ever with 15. She also scored 9 points and blocked a shot.

Sydnee Burgess had a season high 10 assists as she filled the stat sheet again. She also had 8 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks.

Letisia Wilson had 2 points & 5 rebounds. Alexa Rose had 4 points. Sophia Semprini had 2 points. Lauryn Larmore had 3 steals. Annaleece Kercheval had 2 steals.

The Bravettes A-team moves to 9-1 on the season. They go to Iowa Valley on Thursday. Their final game is at North Mahaska on Tuesday.
