Audubon ruled the numbers game . . .totally!

MONTEZUMA – Our thanks to John Beck and Montezuma’s football coaching staff for posting stats last week from the Audubon game.

They’re shown below and no, we’re not trying to disgrace the Braves in any way for an 82-0 defeat.

But we were curious: How could Audubon pitch a shutout against a Montezuma team that had averaged 54 points a game? The Braves’ previous low total was 28, achieved by two other very good teams.

It turns out that Audubon was amazing on defense, too.

The Wheelers limited the Braves to minus 13 yards on 17 rushing attempts.

Montezuma completed eight of 27 passing attempts, good for a positive 74 yards.

The best area for the Braves was punting. Seven Montezuma punts totaled 152 yards. Audubon didn’t have to punt.

Also, the Braves returned eight Audubon kickoffs for a total of 100 yards.

The numbers tell of a pretty grim night of football for the Braves over in the western part of the state. And it made you want to be a fly on a light tower when Audubon visited Iowa Valley on Thursday Nov. 6.

The Braves did receive a banner for making it into the playoffs. (And they won a playoff game, remember, over East Union!

The Audubon-Iowa Valley game didn’t disappoint. Audubon won it 26-19, and will represent state region 3 in the semifinals in the UNIDome.
