BAXTER – The Montezuma ‘B’ junior high boys basketball team scored a 23-18 win on the road Thursday, Jan. 26.
“The boys did a great job persevering in a close game,” said Coach John Beck.
Montezuma led 12-5 at the half after blanking Baxter, 7-0, in the second quarter. The Braves were up 18-16 after three, then edged ahead a bit more near the finish with a 5-2 fourth period.
“Baxter made a run in the third quarter, but we kept doing our thing,” Beck said. ‘Carter Michalek hit two big free throws late to put away the game,” said the coach.
“We did a good job attacking and then making the right decision to take it to the rim or kick out. Our ball movement did improve, but that is something I still would like us to get better at,” Beck said.
Michalek scored 10 points to lead the Braves. David Rose had five, Kohen Holland had four and Spencer Ross scored four.
“Defensively, we caused a lot of turnovers and played very sound in the half-court,” Beck said. “When you have two quarters that result in zero or two points, you’re going to put yourself in a good position at the end of games.”
The ‘B’ team took its record 3-2.
