Balanced Bravettes beat the Bears, 86-27

BROOKLYN – Montezuma worked on the finer aspects of its game and BGM displayed an improved offense as the Bravettes rolled past the Bears, 86-27, in SICL play on Friday evening, Jan. 29.

Montezuma won 91-8 when these teams met in December. But BGM was better on offense than before and got some good looks at the basket now and again against the Bravettes’ relentless defense.

But the Bravettes were balanced on both ends of the floor. They put four girls into double figures, with two others coming up just short.

Guard Mia Boulton led the way with 19 points. Elise Boulton scored 14, Dylan Holland scored 13 and Jadyn Sharer had 12.

Shanae Wetering and Kierstyn Price each had nine points.

“Tonight was a game that showed we had been off for a week,” Bravettes Coach Janel Burgess said. “We started off a bit slow, but we got the engine moving together after a few minutes.”

The Bravettes made just eight turnovers and didn’t shoot until they had good looks at the basket. Montezuma’s defense helped to create 29 BGM turnovers. Holland had a double-double with 11 rebounds to go with her 13 points. She also shot 6-for-6 from the field.

The Bravettes had 31-18 command of the boards. Korrinn Kehoe was second in rebounds with five.

Elise Boulton displayed her all-around talents. In addition to scoring 14 points, she dealed out nine assists. She is one of the state leaders in this category, for all classes. Elise also had five steals and blocked two shots. “Our ball movement is very smooth right now and it is initiated by our point guard (Elise) controlling our tempo,” Burgess said.

“Our defense also created a lot of transition opportunities,” Burgess said. The Bravettes came up with 22 steals for the night, and blocked six shots.

The Bravettes shot .567 from the field. Montezuma limited the Bears to .344 shooting, and just 32 shot attempts, while firing 60 shots themselves.

“We are eager to have the weekend to recover and then have Lynnvile-Sully as opponent at home on Tuesday,” Burgess said.

The win was Montezuma’s 17th straight this season and took the Bravettes to 17-1 on the season. It also kept them a game ahead of the pack in the SICL race.

BGM dropped to 1-17 overall and 1-13 against the league.

Montezuma’s rescheduled home quad against HLV on Saturday has been postponed again by the weather forecast and will now be played Saturday, Feb. 6, starting at 6 p.m. in Montezuma.

UP NEXT – The Bravettes and Braves host Lynnville-Sully on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
