NORTH ENGLISH – The coach said the Braves’ junior varsity basketball team believed start to finish that it could win, and emerged with a 36-28 victory over English Valleys on Tuesday, Jan. 5.
“I was very pleased with how we played,” said Coach Cal Smith. “The boys came out with a lot of energy and intensity and maintained those levels of energy throughout,” he said.
Montezuma trailed 13-10 at halftime, but outscored the Bears 26-15 after intermission.
“We got a good run out of halftime to give us a decent lead and we were able to hold the lead,” Smith said.
Garrett Watts scored 11 points for Montezuma, while Maguire De Jong and Jack Erselius each tallied nine.
De Jong added eight rebounds and three steals.
Camden Michalek had six rebounds to to with three points. The Braves won the rebounding battle by a 32-17 margin.
“Now, we have to build off this success, and hopefully This win will snowball into more wins for the rest of the season,” Smith said.
