BROOKLYN – In order to advance beyond the sectional level in post-season wrestling, and individual has to place first or second in his weight class.
Montezuma’s Zach Bennett at 182 pounds and Kennen Roadcap at 220 came close, but finished with thirds in the Saturday, Feb. 5 event at BGM High School.
All five Brave entrants in the meet placed in the top five.
Roadcap lost a tough 5-3 decision to Cole Fontinel of BGM in his opening round match. That proved important when the two advanced to the second-place bout, because Fontinel got the nod there based on that first-round decision.
Roadcap finished an injury-plagued season with a record of 17-14.
Bennett pushed his final record to 31-8, despite not advancing.
Bennett got to the second-place bout, but was pinned in 5:03, by Brody Hoyt of Iowa Valley.
Brett Plants at 170 pounds placed fourth and had a final season’s record of 15 wins and 16 losses.
Marty Knox at 195 placed fifth, and finished at 18-9.
Braves’ 113-pounder Peter Roberts placed fifth, pinning his man in his fifth-place match, and finishing at 8-14 for the season.
