Lynnville-Sully pounded the offensive boards to aid a 39-29 win over Montezuma in JV boys basketball action on Thursday, Feb. 6.
Neither team shot well – .273 from the field for the Braves, .282 by the Hawks.
But Lynnville-Sully had a 46-23 margin on Montezuma in rebounds, including 30 off the offensive glass. That gave the Hawks opportunities for second chance points, and they cashed in on enough of them.
Montezuma did have the advantage on turnovers, making just eight compared with 22 by the Hawks. “Overall, we played really well,” said Coach Cal Smith.
“Our defense continues to improve, and we do a great job putting on pressure in the full court and forcing turnovers.”
“We unfortunately made a few too many mistakes on offense and turned over the ball,” the coach said. “We need to do a better job passing the ball and getting open when a teammate gets in trouble.”
The Hawks led 12-7 after one quarter, 18-13 at halftime, and 25-20 through three periods.
Gavin Strong scored 11 points for Montezuma and had nine steals.
Cameron Johnson scored 10 points, had five rebounds, three steals, three assists and two three-point baskets.
Colton Benson had six points and four rebounds for Montezuma.
“Even though we lost, we continued o compete to the end, which is very admirable to see out of these young men,” Smith said.
