Boosters gear up for holiday events

Trunk or Treat” in Montezuma will be on Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. around the courthouse square in town.

That’s what members of the Montezuma Community Boosters learned at their monthly meeting Wednesday, Oct. 2, in city hall.

It was reported that Montezuma residents are welcome to bring treats to the square to be given out that evening.

The Boosters decided to continue their Christmas Tree Decorating contest.

Also on the list for Montezuma’s “Hometown Holiday on Saturday, Dec. 7, are a visit by Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, a soup supper at First Presbyterian Evangelical Church, and a cookie walk at United Methodist Church.

Abby Hubbard from the city office mentioned the possibility of horse drawn carriage rides during Hometown Holiday, and that will be looked into.

Rev. George Salnave of First Presbyterian Evangelical Church said volunteers will be ringing bells at several locations in Grinnell. He said they will collect for needed school items.

Poweshiek County Supervisor Diane Dawley told members that a new tree has been planted on courthouse square. She also said the outside benches have been power washed and look great. There is also a section of new sidewalk.

In other business, Hubbard reported the city is working with Mahaska Communications Group on making some repairs.

The club donated $50 to Janet Peiffer’s memorial. It also was noted that the sale at Blooming Endeavors during September went well and there may be another in November. Persons wanting more information may contact Peggy Morse.

Ben Schanbacher of County Bank reported the recent tailgate events in Montezuma and Deep River were successful, with more than 100 persons attending in each community.

Montezuma school students are still volunteering to help with portable meals delivery three days a week.

It was reported that the Montezuma Food Pantry got it carpets cleaned and it is stocked up for the holidays. Walmart and HyVee are the primary donors, but food also is purchased from the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.

Treasurer Deb Ver Meer reported dues had been received from a new Boosters member, the Montezuma Lions Club.
