Boulton, Braves win game of runs

SIGOURNEY – Brady Boulton poured in 37 points for Montezuma.

Issac Bruns scored 28 for Sigourney.

The Braves prevailed, 71-68, in a game of runs on Friday, Dec. 20.

Sigourney is a rangy, athletic team that just kept playing hard against Boulton and the quick Braves.

Montezuma dominated early, leading 19-10 after one quarter, and extending its lead out to 25-12 two minutes into the second.

But that’s when Sigourney went on a memorable run, outscoring the Braves 25-7 during the last six minutes of the first half. The Savages did it by pushing the ball up the floor, then making the extra pass for wide-open looks from three-point range.

Five of those hit the mark, and Sigourney led 37-32 at halftime.

Boulton, Montezuma’s high-scoring guard, usually waits for the game to come to him. Well, it had arrived and he was ready.

Boulton poured in 21 points in the third quarter alone, and Montezuma led 59-53 heading into the fourth.

The Braves led 66-64 when they turned it over with 1:27 left. Sigourney was close to a shot clock violation when the Savages launched a three, which missed, with Kohen Holland grabbing the defensive rebound for the Braves.

The clock ticked down as Sigourney took fouls to put the Braves into the bonus and get them to the line.

But on a Montezuma inbounds pass, they left the 6-5 Holland alone along the baseline, and he drove in and scored while being fouled. He made the free throw, extending Montezuma’s lead to 69-64.

A Sigourney basket cut it to 69-66 with 14 seconds left.

The Braves’ Max Anderson made two from the line to take the Braves’ lead back to 71-66. Two Sigourney free throws cut it to 71-68, then Holland knocked a Sigourney shot out of bounds with 1.8 seconds left.

A three-pointer for the tie was a rim shot, and the Braves picked up a hard-fought road win over a good team.

Boulton’s 37 came on 14-for-26 shooting from the field including 5-for-10 from behind the three-point arc.

Boulton also had 8 steals and 5 assists.

Kohen Holland had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Dane Strong was a third Brave in double figures scoring with 10 points.

The Braves came up with a whopping 19 steals in the contest.

Montezuma closes the pre-holidays portion of its season with a 6-1 record.

Sigourney fell to 4-2.
