Why does Mia Boulton spend countless lonely hours out in the heat of the hottest summer days shooting treys?
So she can come inside on one of the coldest nights of winter and do the same – with people watching.
Boulton and the Bravettes overcame a difficult start, hit Class 2A Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont with 14 treys, and came up with an excellent win on their resumes, 60-53, Friday night, Feb. 4, at home.
Both teams came in with 15-3 records on the season.
“This game was a great learning experience for us and wow, did we ever learn,” said Bravettes Coach Janel Burgess.
Early on, EBF’s quickness and shooting abilities looked like trouble for the Bravettes.
The Rockets had a 15-4 lead late in the first quarter, forcing Montezuma Coach Janel Burgess two take a pair of time-outs.
After the second one, things changed, if ever so subtly.
EBF had been running down diagonal passes the Bravettes tried to throw through their zone. Now, Montezuma skipped the ball over the top.
One pass back out, and Boulton was free.
“I am so proud of EACH of our players for adjusting, playing through adversity, and playing THEIR role,” the coach said.
On defense, the Bravettes tried to force the Rockets to take the ball up the sideline. EBF was trouble when the Rocket attacked the middle.
Montezuma came back and trailed just 28-25 at halftime.
Then came the third quarter, a 22-8 explosion for the Bravettes.
Boulton made 8 three-point baskets, and one two-pointer, for 26 points.
Forward Shanae Wetering was operating off short drives and outside shots, and scored 18.
Guard Jaydn Sharer scored 6.
The Bravettes assisted 17 of their 20 field goals, which probably was the most telling statistic of all.
Boulton was 8-for-13 on treys. She also had 5 steals and 4 rebounds.
Wetering hit a pair of three-pointers, grabbed 9 rebounds and dished 4 assists.
“We scheduled EFB and Grundy Center at the end so we had competition that is comparable to post-season,” Burgess said.
“This is perfect preparation for the final steps in our journey as the post-season is just around the corner,” she said.
UP NEXT – Montezuma has another tough one on Monday, hosting Grundy Center. “We are eager to host Grundy Center and then head into step one of our post-season run in a week,” Burgess said.
SHANAE SIGNS MONDAY – Shanae Wetering will sign her letter of intent to attend Clarke University in Dubuque at 2:45 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, in the North Gym. The public is welcome to attend!
