Boys golfers are burning the links!

Red flag warnings mean conditions are right for wildfires to start and spread.

There were no wildfires in the area when Montezuma’s golfers hosted North Tama and BGM on Thursday, April 21.

That didn’t stop the Braves from “burning” the links at Montezuma Country Club.

Owen Cook looks happy as he golfs on a nice spring afternoon.

The Montezuma boys posted the low six scores – and a team score of 152 – to defeat North Tama (196) and BGM (212).

The girls played well, too. Their score of 229 was second to North Tama’s 223. BGM did not have enough golfers to figure a team score.

Our boys and girls did a fantastic job competing on their home course,” said Montezuma co-head coach Liesl Roorda.

They really have been focusing on their short games, realizing the importance of hard work around the green in order to be competitive,” the coach said. “They are tracking their shots and analyzing what they specifically need to work on.”

Meet medalist for the boys was Eddie Burgess, scoring a personal best with a one under par 34. Runner up medalist was Maguire De Jong with a 37.

Girls meet medalist was North Tama’s Molly Voegler with a 48, followed by a card-off between Montezuma’s Chloe Hutchcraft and North Tama’s Kaitlyn Calderwood, both with 52s.

Hole number 8 was the deciding hole, and Calderwood came out as runner up medalist,” Roorda said.

The girls are working hard and enjoying the game, along with learning and redefining their skills,” Roorda said.

Shot tracker cards have helped Montezuma golfers study situations, locations, and more. They were courtesy of Sutherland Printing.
