The Braves got to run a victory lap – around their own track!

Winning four events and taking seconds in seven, Montezuma won the Darrell Brand Relays on Monday, May 8.

The Braves put up 131 team points, beating Belle Plaine by four.

It was a great night to run and we had a good meet,” said Coach John Beck. “I was very proud of the boys.”

Montezuma’s wins were by Kenny Criswell in the 100-meter dash and Colton Benson in the 3,200-meter run, and by the 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams.

The Braves got seconds from Jack Erselius in the 200, Jayden Ross in the 1,600, Benson in the 3,200 and Broox Stockman in the 400 hurdles, Garrett Watts in the high jump and long jump, and from the 4×800 relay.

We went into this meet wanting to be fresh for Thursday’s state qualifying meet, while also getting a last chance to look at and fix a few things,” Beck said.

Coming out with the win was just a by-product of guys working hard and the team figuring out sme things,” he added.

Garrett Watts is WAY up there. His best of 5-8 was second in the high jump.

Beck said he was pleased “with the attention to detail our guys had. When I walked out after school we had athletes practicing handoffs, warming up, and just doing a lof ot the little things that put a smile on a coach’s face,” he said.

It wasn’t all perfect, but we took a step in the right direction.”
