Montezuma boys head track Coach John Beck was pleased at how the Braves ended their season – both Garrett Watts at the state meet, and how the team finished the season in general.

I was very proud of how Garrett ran at state,” Beck said. “It was a new experience for the track team as Garrett is the only Brave in our school right now to have run there.”

He ran close to his personal record time and I think would have put one up, but he hit his first hurdle out of the gate and was playing catch-up the rest of the way.”

It seemed that he was very fast between the hurdles and had a nice start out of the blocks,” Beck said. “I am excited to see what Garrett can do next year and he hopes to better his performance.”

Regarding the recently-completed season, Beck said he was pleased overall. “We are a relatively young squad yet as we had two seniors in Colton Benson and Gavin Strong. Both were great leaders for us!”

It was a year of getting better as we continued to improve as the year went on,” the coach said

In our district meet we had multiple relay groups set season-bests and multiple individuals also run personal records. We were very close on a couple of relays with the 4×100 being 2 places out from making state and our shuttle hurdle being 4 places out,” Beck said.

Both groups bring back everyone who ran at the district meet, added the coach.

Overall we won a couple meets and were very competitive throughout the year, Beck said. “This makes me very excited for next season as we return 19 guys and bring up some freshmen who competed well as 8th graders.”
