Boys win, work on short game

By Coach Liesl Roorda

SIGOURNEY – Montezuma’s boys gofl team traveled to Sigourney Wednesday, April 28, to compete on a beautiful, sunny afternoon against conference rival Sigourney and Class 2A Van Buren.

Montezuma came out on top 169 to Van Buren’s 170 and Sigourney’s 178.

Maguire De Jong shot a season-low 38 to take medalist honors.  Van Buren’s Clayton Bruckman was runner-up.

The boys took on the challenge of the smallest greens in Iowa and fought through a few penalty strokes to bring home first place.

For a relatively inexperienced team, the boys are highly-athletic. They are motivated and working to improve, become more consistent and they make good decisions on shots and clubs, especially when hazards are in play.

They are realizing that the short game is where they can make the most improvement in their game and working to shoot more consistently on and around the green.

Montezuma’s JV team was also able to compete and brought in a 186.  At this point we are still looking for the 5th and 6th man to step up with consistency so it is still anyone’s game for the final post-season varsity spots.

Next up is the last home co-ed meet on Thursday, April 29, against English Valleys.
