Boys work hard in some tough weather

Is it any warmer up there? Jayden Ross looks ahead during a distance relay at the Lynnville-Sully Invite, which was run in cold conditions. (Submitted).

SULLY – It was damp. And it was raw. Certainly not summer resort weather.

But the boys ran really well in very unfavorable conditions and I am very proud of how they competed,” Montezuma boys track Coach John Beck said.

The meet was the Lynnville-Sully Invitational, run on the same evening (Tuesday, April 5) when Montezuma’s scheduled girls meet over at nearby Monroe was weathered out.

The Braves put up 60 points to take seventh place in an eight-team meet.

We had a focus on getting better with the little things – hand-offs, starts, hurdle form, etc. – and I thought the boys executed those really well,” Beck said.

There is still some work to be done with those things – and always will be – but I liked their attention to detail when working on them.”

Jack Erselius competes at Lynnville-Sully.

The Braves didn’t win any events, but placed well in a number of them. One of the better showings of strength came in the high jump, where Eli Bustamante and Garrett Watts cleared 5-4 and 5-2, respectively. They tied for third and fifth with those efforts.

Complete Montezuma place finishes and efforts are at the end of this story.

We are really looking forward to getting out there in our next meet and looking for more improvement,” Beck said.

UP NEXT – That next meet is scheduled for Thursday, April 7, when both the boys and girls compete at North Mahaska.
