Southeast Warren was the kind of game Montezuma needed as the Braves prepare for late- and post-season play.
The Braves were 41-12 winners in a game that tested their physicality and their patience on Friday, Sept. 24.
“On offense, we did a good job establishing our run game and taking what they gave us in the passing game,” said Braves Coach John Beck.
“The offensive line of Jack Brenner, TJ Townsend and Kennen Roadcap, as well as our tight end, Camden Michalek, did a great job of providing running lanes for our backs,” the coach said.
“Our receivers, Masin (Shearer) and Owen (Cook), did a good job of finding the open space in their zone coverage,” Beck said.
“Eddie Burgess did a great job of reading the defense and taking the yards that they were giving. His vision on the field and ability to read a defense is phenomenal,” said the coach.
“Connor Van Zee also did a great job of running hard and getting some tough yards,” Beck said.
“On defense, our guys did their jobs,” Beck said. “This is something that we stress at practice and it is good to see it translate to the field.”
“Our linemen did a good job of pursuing to the ball,” Beck said. “Tod Geiger is a guy who does all the little things for our defense. He will take on a double-team or a kick-out block and really blow up the play.”
The coach said Zach Bennett again played with a high level of positive activity. “All night long, and he made so many good plays for us,” Beck said.
“Marty Knox, Eddie Burgess and Brett Plants did a great job as well,” the coach said. “They fly to the ball and finish tackles well.”
“Our corners did a good job limiting them and the big play,” Beck said. “We did a good job of keeping them in front and forcing them to have sustained drives to score.”
The coach also had good words for Owen Cook’s kicking. “He was a real weapon,” Beck said. “He puts in a lot of time kicking and it really shows.”
