BROOKLYN – Montezuma and BGM, two high-powered Class 8 football teams, played a scoreless first quarter.

No one expected that to continue, and it didn’t. The Braves’ ability to play add-on – as in 19 points in the second quarter and 19 more in the third -was key in a 46-27 district win in the schools’ annual rivalry game.

Quarterback Beau Burns was the big play man for the Bears, throwing touchdown passes of 55 and 65 yards, and scoring on runs of 64 and 70 yards.

But the Braves had a three-headed scoring monster surface when the Bears challenged.

Celebrate! Braves Brady Boulton and Houston Van Roekel jump for joy in front of BGM players who dream of what might have been.

Quarterback Brady Boulton scored on two runs, threw for a touchdown, and intercepted a pass on the last play of third quarter.

Fullback Brett Plants ran for three touchdowns and intercepted a pass which he returned 61 yards, leading to a score.

And halfback Broox Stockman scored on a run and on a pass from Boulton.

Penalties stymied both offenses in the first quarter and continued to hurt especially the Bears after that.

The Braves led 19-7 at halftime, and 38-19 through three quarters. Each team scored one touchdown in the fourth period.

BGM gained 445 yards on 56 total plays. The Braves netted 415 on 64, but also killed and controlled clock with 302 yards on 54 rushes.

The Braves were assassins on defense, netting 25 solos in 42 total tackles.

Take this! Braves fullback Brett Plants hands the ball to an official after one of Plants’ three touchcowns.

Burns completed 11 of 23 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns for BGM, but the Braves intercepted him 3 times.

Burns rushed for 191 yards on 26 carries.

Tucker Wright caught 7 passes for 117 yards and one score for the

Bears, and led BGM with 12.5 tackles, 11 of them solo.

Broox Stockman had 10.5 tackles, 8 of them solo, for the Braves.

Boulton led Montezuma rushers with 136 yards on 18 carries, including two touchdown runs.

Fullback Brettt Plants rushed 20 times for 120 yards and thre scores.

Stockman had 71 yards on 16 rushes, including one touchdown.

Carter Michalek led four Braves pass catcher with 3 snags for 49 yards.

The loss dropped BGM to 2-3 on the season.

Montezuma rose to 5-1, which includes 3-0 in district play.

UP NEXT – The Braves host unbeaten Belle Plaine at Badger-Gabriel field on Friday, Oct. 4, in a game that has district championship ramifications.

Brady Boulton is back to throw behind blocks from Houston Van Roekel (55) and Briar Simpson.
