Braves beat BGM to go to 2-0

Montezuma played tight defense against BGM and it made a difference.

The Braves played errorless ball and scored a 9-6 win over the Bears in the SICL opener for Montezuma on Wednesday evening, May 26, at home.

The victory lifted Montezuma to 2-0 overall on the young season.

The Braves led 5-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but scored four runs in the frame to pull away.

Montezuma outhit BGM 11 to seven and the Braves were seven-for-seven stealing bases.

Cole Watts went three-for-four at the plate, including a double, and was successful on all three of his steal attempts.

Connor Van Zee was two-for-four, including a double and three runs batted in. He also stole two bases.

Colton Benson was three-for-four at the dish, with two RBIs.

Garrett Watts had one hit, and drove home two runs.

Owen Cook was Montezuma’s winning pitcher. He worked 5.2 innings, gave up six hits and four runs, all of them earned. He walked two and struck out eight.

Cole Watts was a base bandit against BGM, getting three steals in three tries. He also was three-for-four at the plate, with a double.

Trase Kriegel was two-for-three with two RBIs for the Bears. Jacob Mauer was two-for-three.

Kriegel pitched five innings, but of the five runs scored against him, just two were earned. BGM made eight errors in the contest.
