Braves conquer wind, Iowa Valley

By Coach Liesl Roorda

MARENGO – Montezuma’s boys and girls teams traveled to the Marengo Golf Course to take on Iowa Valley on Monday, April 26.

It was a sunny, beautiful afternoon with high gusting winds as the athletes took to the sloping and hilly course.

For the newer golfers, the creek running through the middle of the course and the winds, on especially the roadside holes, brought some challenges and frustrations which needed to be conquered.

Overall, the varsity boys came out on top scoring 178 to the Tigers’ 210.

Montezuma’s JV boys came in with a team score of 198.  Medalist for the meet was Eddie Burgess with a 42 and runner-up medalist was Trey Shearer with a 45.  Also scoring a 45 was Maguire De Jong.

Montezuma’s girls experienced the Marengo course for the first time and worked hard to conquer the hills and valleys.  Maddy Fleming golfed a season-best 51 and came in just one stroke over the runner up medalist.  Iowa Valley’s 218 took honors over Montezuma’s 234.

Wednesday, the boys will travel to Sigourney to play the home team and Van Buren.  Thursday will be the final home meet of the season against English Valleys and all of our JV and varsity golfers will play.
