Braves fall to Sigourney Savages

SIGOURNEY – Sigourney used one big inning – a 13-run fourth – to beat Montezuma in baseball, 13-0 in five innings on Monday, June 14.

The victory kept the Savages atop the South Iowa Cedar League standings at 7-0. They were 9-1 overall after the game.

The Braves fell to 4-3 against the league and 5-3 overall.

Montezuma had five hits, one more than the Savages. But Sigourney benefited from eight walks and from having five men hit by pitches.

Montezuma’s five hits came at the top of the order, from Cole Watts, Owen Cook, Eddie Burgess, Connor Van Zee and Cam Johnson.

Eddie Burgess started and took the pitching defeat. He worked 3.1 innings, giving up two hits and five runs, none of them earned. He walked three and struck out five.

Cam Johnson gave up one hit and five runs, all of them earned, and walked three during his time on the bump.

Colton Benson pitched 0.2 of an inning and gave up one hit and three runs, two of them earned.

Bo Schmidt pitched the five inning distance for Sigourney and struck out seven.
