CORYDON – It didn’t take Montezuma long to establish its dominance over hosting Wayne of Corydon in what was expected to be a Class 8 District bell-ringer.
It was the faster, quicker Braves who rang the bell early – a 32-6 Montezuma lead after one quarter, and an eventual 63-20 victory on Friday evening, Sept. 5.
Braves quarterback Brady Boulton threw three touchdown passes in that first quarter alone, and running back Broox Stockman ran for two more in that period.
They played add-on after that.
Montezuma extended its halftime lead to 48-12.
The Falcons made many of Montezuma’s big plays go outside the tackles, but the Braves were happy to take the choice that was offered because the Falcons often were slow getting to edge.
In addition, Montezuma’s pass catchers confused the defense with frequent crossing patterns.
Wayne gained some yardage with sheer power, but it didn’t stay in contention score-wise.
A check of Montezuma’s offensive yardage (not available at this writing) will confirm what you’ve just read. And we’ll have those totals later on Saturday.
Defensively, the Braves were able to stay lower to the ground on tackles, an element that was lacking somewhat in a win over Spingville last week.
Next week, Montezuma hosts Iowa Valley, in a meeting of a pair of teams that were rated in the top 8 in this week’s Iowa polls.
Score by quarters
Montezuma 32 16 8 7 – 63
Wayne 6 6 8 0 – 20
