MONTEZUMA – The varsity Braves got to wrestle in front of the home crowd – and it was a big crowd – at the Montezuma Duals on Thursday evening, Jan. 16.
The Braves won one of their three duals, pinning Moravia 49-18.
And they fell but battled against Belle Plaine and Iowa Valley.
But a highlight of the night for those who were there had to be senior 190-pounder Brett Plants picking up his 100th career victory.
It didn’t take him long, either, as he pinned Kennick Eastlick of Moravia in just 17 seconds.
Fans who had “100” printed on cards didn’t miss their cue, as they added a visual to the considerable noise.
The Iowa Valley dual featured a couple of dandy battles in two of the upper weights.
At 190 pounds, the Tigers’ Josh Read – and that same Brett Plants – went into overtime. If you’ll look at the score box, it says Read was the winner, “SV-1, 9-6.”
That means sudden victory, first criteria. The first wrestler to score in overtime is the winner, then they list the match score.
The next battle was at 215, where the fur flew in the match between Ian Smith of the Tigers and the Braves’ Braxton Plants. Braxton prevailed, 12-11.
This was Montezuma’s final home meet of the wrestling season.
