Braves get “walk-off” tourney win!
URBANDALE – Colton Benton singled home Cam Johnson in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Montezuma Braves scored a 3-2 “walk-off” victory over Twin Cedars in first round district baseball play Monday evening, July 12.
The game was a resumption of the game suspended from Saturday by weather.
Montezuma (12-6) will return to Urbandale on Tuesday to play Ankeny Christian (27-4). First pitch is at 7 p.m.
The game was a 2-2 tie when the Braves came up in the bottom half of the seventh.
Johnson promptly blasted a double to put himself in scoring position with no one out.
Braves coach Josh Anderson then ran a fake bunt play with Colton Benson at the plate, and Johnson stole third base.
Benson then singled on a 1-2 pitch to drive home the winning run.
When play was suspended on Saturday, the Braves were leading 2-1 and had one out and one on base in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Twin Cedars scored in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2.
The Braves out-hit the Sabers 9-4. Eddie Burgess started on Saturday and pitched the four innings played then. Owen Cook worked the final
three on Monday. Both pitchers were tough.
Burgess allowed one run. It was earned, even though the Braves won a tournament game in which they made five errors. Burgess allowed three hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out three.
Cook pitched three innings, allowing one run, which was not earned. He yielded one hit, walked one and struck out four. And, he picked up the pitching victory.
Eight different Braves contributed to Montezuma’s nine-hit attack.
Cole Watts was two-for-two with a double and a stolen base.
Burgess had one hit and drove in a run.
Connor Van Zee had a hit and a stolen base.

Benson had one hit, and it was a game-winner.
Cruz De Jong had a hit.
Garrett Watts drove in a run with his hit, and Gavin Strong’s hit was a double.
Twin Cedars ended its season with a record of 15-11.
