It went well for the Montezuma Braves from the start against Woodward Academy.
The Braves were 78-0 winners as icy winds howled across Badger-Gabriel Field on Friday night, Oct. 14.
The Braves (7-2), will get a re-do against Iowa Valley (6-3) in the first round of the Class 8 playoffs on Friday, Oct. 21 at Badger-Gabriel. Iowa Valley beat Montezuma 36-33 in the season-opener.
Freshman Brady Boulton intercepted a pass on the first series of the game, giving Montezuma the ball on Woodward Academy’s 28-yard line.
Quarterback Owen Cook passed to wide receiver Masin Shearer for a touchdown, and Cook’s point-after kick made it 7-0.
It was only the beginning.
The Braves defense held on downs, but the visitors went for it on fourth-and-nine. They didn’t make it.
Montezuma responded with a wildcat play, snapping directly to Kennen Roadcap, who normally is a tackle. Roadcap ran it in for a touchdown and a 13-0 lead with 7:13 still to play in the first quarter.
Woodward Academy went for it again on a fourth-and-nine and the Braves again stopped it.
Cook immediately passed 19 yards to fullback Brett Plants, and it was 20-0.
Cook and Plants connected again, this time from two yards out, and Montezuma led 27-0 with 1:35 still remaining in the first period.
Montezuma led 43-0 at halftime.
The win finished Montezuma’s season at 7-2, and they’re awaiting assignment to an opponent and a site for next Friday’s opening round of the Class 8 playoffs. As a district champion, they’re hoping for a home game.
Woodward Academy passed in the songbooks on an 0-7 season.
