Braves football Coach John Beck saw some good things from his team, despite the 52-20 setback to a good, physical Southeast Warren football team on Friday evening, Sept. 23, in Lacona.

Offensively, our line played well, for the most part,” Beck said. “We got movement and were able to run and move the ball at times. We had to go away from it later in the game because of the score,” he said.

Our offensive linemen also did pretty well in pass protection when we could block three-on-three,” said the coach.

When we went with an empty backfield they sometimes brought pressure and that is what led to some problems,” Beck said.

Our wide receivers did a good job running routes and Owen (quarterback Cook) delivered some good balls to them.”

Penalties set us back and some untimely turnovers hurt us,” said Montezuma’s coach. “It seemed like every time we were moving the ball in the first three quarters we had something set us back. Those are things we can control and will work on this week.”

Defensively, our linemen played pretty well. They faced a big task and handled it well,” Beck said. “They took on a lot of double teams and cut blocks. We struggled some in the secondary with coming up and tackling their big backs and reading our keys when they went to play-action.”

Our linebackers flowed and tackled well,” the coach said. “We just need to work on shedding blocks.”

Sabers looking for a way

Twin Cedars will carry an 0-6 record into their home game against 4-2 Montezuma on Friday night.

They throw the ball a bit more than they have in the past,” Beck said. “They have switched their defense to a 2-3 this year.”

They play hard and are coached well,” the Braves’ coach said.

They just have not put it all together.”

Braves haven’t lost in district

Montezuma remains unbeaten (at 3-0) in district plaly, tied with Baxter (6-0 overall; 3-0 district).

Friday’s game against Southeast Warren was something a little different – a non-district contest at mid-season.

The Braves have three regular season games remaining. Their major pre-season goals remain out there. It will take some focused work to get there.
