AMES – The Braves have a shot at this!

Montezuma’s boys golf team trails by just two strokes after Day 1 of the Class 1A boys state golf championship on Monday, May 22.

At first glace, it appeared Montezuma’s individual scores were coming in a bit on the high side. They were, but so were the totals of the other teams.

CAM-Anita shot 335 to lead, followed by Remsen-St. Mary’s at 336, then Montezuma and Hillcrest Academy were tied for third at 337.

A good thing: The Braves don’t have to climb above a lot of teams to get into first place. But what’s tough, and promises to make things exciting on Tuesday: Just 12 strokes separate the first- and tenth-place teams.

Maguire De Jong led the Braves with a 79, with Cruz De Jong in at 80.

They ranked sixth and ninth, respectively, out of 69 players.

On Tuesday, the low four scorers on each team will add to the team totals, so it could come down to play by a golfer who wasn’t one of his team’s top four on Monday.

Montezuma is making its first-ever appearance in the state finals in golf.
