SULLY – Sometimes the scoreboard doesn’t tell a complete enough story about high school athletics.

Lynnville-Sully’s baseball team took its record out to 21-1 on Friday evening, June 23, with a 5-1 win over Montezuma.

For the 7-7 Braves, that score represented a major push they gave the home team to stay that close.

The Hawks led 4-0 though three innings. Montezuma scored a run in the fourth to make it 4-1.

Catcher Cruz De Jong seems to be showing Coach Josh Anderson how close some pitches were from catching the strike zone.

Braves starting pitcher Garrett Watts threw 110 pitches though 5.2 innings pitched on a torrid, sun-drenched evening. He scatered four hits, walked six and struck out five. Luke Erselius pitched 0.1 innings in relief.

Corder Noun Harder hit a double for Lynnville-Sully and Lannon Mongomery stroked a triple. The team stole six bases, two of them by C.J. Nikkel.

Watts had the only hit and scored Montezuma’s run.

Caleb Rea started and worked the first 3.2 innings for the Hawks. He allowed the hit and the run, didn’t walk anyone and struck out nine.

Lucas Sieck pitched 2.1 innings in relief and wound up with the win. He didn’t allow a hit, and struck out three. Samuel Philby provided relief help for the Hawks.

READY TO RIP. Broox Stockman eyes the pitcher carefully.
