BUSSEY – The Montezuma Braves got rid of last week’s frustration with an 82-12 run past winless Twin Cedars on Friday evening, Sept. 30.
The win set up a district championship game next Friday at Badger-Gabriel Field between the Braves and unbeaten Baxter, with both teams already assured of post-season play.
The Braves led 41-0 after one quarter of Friday’s game, and 55-6 at halftime, setting up a continuous clock after intermission.
With substitutes playing liberally, the Braves “won” the second half by a 27-6 margin.
“It was a good team win,” said Braves Coach John Beck. “We played focused and took care of business.”
Montezuma had a 48-0 lead in this game less than 15 minutes after the opening kickoff.
The Braves snapped the ball 30 times and netted 438 passing and rushing yards, an average of 14.6 per play.
Montezuma passed for five touchdowns and ran for six.
Quarterback Owen Cook was 7-for-10 through the air for 174 yards and five touchdowns.
Garrett Watts caught two passes for 57 yards and two scores. All four Braves pass catchers scored at least one touchdown.
Brady Ogan led tacklers with 5.0, while Brady Boulton and Lars Taylor had 4.0 each.
Boulton, a freshman, had a 70-yard scoop and score touchdown after recovering a fumble. He also ran the ball twice for 38 yards, including a touchdown, and had a 23-yard kickoff return.
The Braves intercepted three passes and recovered two Twin Cedars fumbles.
Cook kicked off 13 times, 10 of them for touchbacks and a total of 613 yards. He was 10-for-12 on point after kicks.
The win lifted the Braves to 5-2 overall, including a 3-0 record in district play.
Twin Cedars fell to 0-7.
