NEW LONDON – Domination!

The Montezuma Braves took their football record to 3-0 on Friday, Sept. 11, with a 56-20 defeat of New London.

The Braves dominated with their passing game in the first half, their running during the third quarter, and the defense kept the Tigers mostly in front of them throughout.

The Tigers had no answer for Montezuma quarterback Eddie Burgess and receivers Trey Shearer and Cole Watts.

Shearer scored four times on passes of 15, 45, 15 and 8 yards from Burgess and on a nine-yard run.

A light but steady rain appeared to have little impact on the Braves’ passing game. Burgess threw the four touchdown passes to Shearer, ran for two scores, returned a kickoff 72 yards for a touchdown and even ran a two-point conversion.

Burgess also passed to Watts for several long gains.

New London scored on long runs twice in the first quarter and again in the third, but had trouble moving steadily against a quick-flowing Montezuma defense.

Montezuma led 28-14 after one quarter, 41-14 at halftime and 56-20, the final score, after three periods. The game went to a continuous clock with about two minutes left in the third period.

The defeat was the first for New London, ranked #11 in this week’s state poll, after two victories.

UP NEXT – The Braves, ranked seventh this week, are at English Valleys on Friday, Sept. 18.
