Braves persevere past Lynnville-Sully

MONTEZUMA – Montezuma edged away in the fourth quarter and came away with a 62-55 win over Lynnville-Sully and a hard-fought and well-played varsity boys basketball game on Tuesday evening, Jan. 21.

The Braves outscored the Hawks 15-9 in the decisive fourth quarter, extending a 47-46 lead through three quarters.

The win lifted Montezuma to 13-1 on the season.

The defeat dropped Lynnville-Sully to 10-4.

Montezuma had three double figures scorers, led by junior guard Brady Boulton with 29 points. He also led Braves rebounders with 7.

Post forward Kohen Holland came up big for the Braves against the Hawks’ front line. He scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Guard Max Anderson dropped in 10 points for the Braves.

Defense was just as important to the Braves. They helped to induce 14 Lynnville-Sully turnovers, while making just nine themselves.

Carson Maston and Dawson James were Lynnville-Sully’s stat leaders. Maston scored 21 points on 9-for-16 shooting. James scored 19 and was 8-for-14 from the floor.

Maston led all rebounders with 13 and James had 7 as the Hawks led 35-17 in that category. The Hawks won several stat categories, but the Braves made seven three point baskets to Lynnville-Sully’s four, and shot .500 from the field, to the Hawks’ .426.

UP NEXT – Montezuma’s boys – and girls – have a big double date on Friday, Jan. 24, when both host North Mahaska.
