Braves put up some crooked numbers!

Montezuma sophomore quarterback Eddie Burgess was the state Class 8 leader in passing yardage during the Braves’ recently completed 6-3 season.

The Des Moines Register published a story listing some of the leaders, based on records posted on the Quick Stats website, which are compiled thanks to the hard work of coaches and stat crews affiliated with the various teams.

We’ve added a few Montezuma names, again based on Quick Stats.

Burgess threw for 2,914 yards on a 58 percent completion average. He had 49 touchdown passes. His season yardage total was the fifth-best all-time in Class 8.

The second-place total in yardage this season was 2,818.

Cole Watts was a 1,000-yard receiver . . .

Braves Cole Watts and Trey Shearer ranked third and fifth, respectively, in receiving yards.

Watts had 59 catches for 1,116 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Shearer grabbed 58 for 1,006 yards and 19 scores.

Burgess is a sophomore, while Watts and Shearer are juniors.

Burgess also was a 1,000-yards rusher – 1,025, to be precise, including 20 touchdowns.

Burgess was a runaway leader in total passing and rushing yards with 3,915, almost 700 ahead of WACO quarterback Nik Coble.

Of note was the leading rusher in the state, New London’s Shae Summerfield. He rushed for 2,117 yards, with 448 of them coming against Montezuma in week 9.

Several other Braves performed at state list levels.

Freshman Owen Cook was #2 in number of kickoffs with 88. Those went for 3,179 yards and 13 touch-backs.

. . . Trey Shearer also was a 1,000-yard receiver.

Cook also was seventh in number of PAT kicks made. He had 27, (on 37 tries, for 73 percent).

Watts was second in kickoff return average at 45.0.

Defensively, Brian Diaz ranked #32 in total tackles with 76.5.

Burgess was #40, at 70.5.
