The cavalry got there, just in time!
The Montezuma Braves put up three runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning to beat Lynnville-Sully, 4-3.
The game was played Friday evening, July 2, in Montezuma.
The Braves were out-hit 10-6, and made seven errors, to just one by the Hawks. But when starting pitcher Eddie Burgess needed an “out” pitch, he came up with one. More than one, in fact.
The Hawks scored two runs in the first, one in the third, and took that 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth, when the Braves scored their first run.
Then came the three-run seventh.
Burgess was two-for-three at the plate, and pitched all seven innings. The three runs against him were unearned. He walked two and struck out seven.
Four Braves had one hit each.
Cole Watts hit a double and drove in a run.
Owen Cook singled home two runs.
Cruz De Jong had a hit and Garrett Watts singled home a run.
Cam Johnson had a stolen base.
Caleb Rea, Blake Rea and Mason Jansen each had two hits for the Hawks. Blake Rea drove in a run and Caleb Rea hit a double. Corder Noun Harder was two-for-two on stolen bases.
Connor Maston again was tough on the mound, although the Braves finally reached him in the seventh. He threw 6.2 innings, walked one and struck out 10.
Braden Alberts relieved, and was reached for two hits and a run.
The win lifted Montezuma to 10-6 for the regular season and 9-6 in SICL play.
The Hawks were at 16-10 and 12-4.
UP NEXT – It’s on to post-season play for Montezuma, which faces Twin Cedars at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 10, in Urbandale. But first, the Braves have a regular season makeup game to play, at home, against HLV. The day will start at 1 p.m on Monday, July 5.
