COLFAX – Montezuma’s offense kept the pressure on from the start and the Braves beat Colfax-Mingo, 11-6 on Friday evening, May 28.
The victory lifted the Braves to a 3-0 start overall, which includes 2-0 in SICL play.
The Braves lined 15 hits in this game.
Cole Watts led the assault by going four-for-five at bat, and four-for-four on stolen base attempts. He hit a double and drove in a run.
Five other Montezuma players had multi-hit games.
Eddie Burgess, the starting and winning pitcher, was two-for-three with a run batted in.
Connor Van Zee went two-for-four with a double and an RBI.
Cam Johnson went two-for-three.
Senior left fielder Joey Kercheval was two-for-three with two runs batted in.
Gavin Strong was two-for-three, and Owen Cook stole two bases.
The Braves plated two runs in the first inning, then put up a five-spot in the fourth inning to take an 8-2 lead.
Burgess pitched the first five innings, allowing eight hits and three runs, all earned. He walked just one and struck out eight.
Johnson relieved the final two innings, allowing one hit and three runs, two of them earned. He walked three and fanned three.
Colfax-Mingo fell to 1-2 overall.
