Braves say Thank You and so do we!

A 52-7 score against you isn’t what you want to put up in your last game of the season, especially if you’ve reached the quarterfinals round of the state playoffs.

But, that’s what happened to the Montezuma Braves when they went up against unbeaten WACO on Thursday, Nov. 3 in Wayland.

Braves Coach John Beck took some time to ponder the season, before he posted this note, which appeared on Montezuma’s school web site on Nov. 5:

After a couple of days of reflection, all I can say is Thank You!”

Thank You to the Montezuma faithful and their support throughout the year!”

Thank You to all the coaches and players for your dedication and effort!”

Thank You to the seniors! You guys led this team the right way!”

There is so much to be proud of and so many memories made during this roller coaster of a season!”

WACO was challenged in the Class 8 semifinals, but prevailed 29-21 over Newell-Fonda in the Warriors’ first close game of the season.

WACO plays for the state championship against Remsen St. Mary’s on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 9:30 a.m.

A look back at the game stats shows the Braves did some impressive things in their final game.

The Braves led 14-9 in first downs, 64-36 in total number of offensive plays, and 31:17 to 16:43 in time of possession.

The Warriors were excellent open field tacklers and solid blockers. Simeon Reichenbach, their 6-3, 220-pound running back, could change directions quickly and maintain speed and power.

WACO had 11 possessions and scored six touchdowns and a field goal.

The Braves had 12 possessions and scored one touchdown and missed on two field goal attempts.

Perhaps the most telling stat: Montezuma’s net of just four rushing yards in the game.

The Braves completed a 9-3 season and showed much resiliency in playing through some key injuries – which is especially tough in eight-man football.

Many in the community have taken the opportunity to congratulate the coaches and players – and rightly so!!

WHOOPS! In a recent story, I reported that Braves kicker Owen Cook was fifth all-time in Class 8 for point after kicks. He is second all-time. I apologize for and regret the error.
