The state golf finals will be new ground for Montezuma’s players on Monday and Tuesday, May 22-23.
The Braves are making their first-ever appearance at state.
But this Montezuma team belongs at state. They’ve been the lowest-scoring Class 1A team for much of the season.
They had a nervous hiccup last week when they finished third in their district.
But they got there.
Carsten James will be the first Brave to tee off at 11:30 a.m. on Monday.
The rest of the Braves for Monday’s session: Max Anderson, Jack Erselius, Owen Cook, Cruz De Jong and Maguire De Jong.
After the first day of play, the lowest four scores by each team will be that team’s score.
On Tuesday, they start over, but not exactly from scratch.
Once again, the low four scores will be added – and then added to Monday’s total to determine the final team score.
That should reward consistency, and the Braves have been consistent – with low scores, especially the last one-third of the season.
Montezuma will normally shoot 320 or better for 18-holes. That’s 80 strokes per golfer, and that shows a lot of depth for a Class 1A program.
If you’re reading this in Montezuma Magazine, we plan to cover the meet each day, as usual.
Readers in The Record, however, will only get the Monday results in Thursday’s paper, which is printed on Tuesday but before the action is complete.
Again, action is at the Ames Golf and Country Club.
