The baseball Braves experienced some fulfillment when they beat a team, BGM, they have had problems with in recent seasons.
Montezuma rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to produce a walk-off, 5-4 victory over the Bears on Monday evening, June 22.
Eddie Burgess, Owen Cook and Cole Watts combined for the pitching win for the Braves, with starter Burgess giving up just three hits and on earned run over five innings.
Meanwhile, Montezuma was able to generate an eight-hit attack, led by a three-for-four effort by Connor Van Zee.
The win lifted the Braves to 2-1 on the season.
Montezuma jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead. BGM scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, then two in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. Then came the Braves’ winning rally.
Van Zee drove in two runs with his hits. Getting one hit each were Cole Watts, Cook, Burgess, Brayden Arendt and Kodie Strong.
Preston Hirsch drove in two huge runs without benefit of a hit. He drew a pair of walks.
Cole Watts and Strong each stole a base for Montezuma.
Mitchell White led the Bears with two hits, including a double, and had a run batted in. Jake Moel pitched the first six innings for BGM, drove in a run, and left the mound with a lead.
Burgess started for the Braves and worked five innings, allowing three hits and four runs, just one of which was earned. He walked two and struck out six.
Cook pitched one inning, walked one and fanned two.
Watts finished up in the seventh and got the win. He didn’t allow a hit and struck out a batter.
